From Causeway Bay to Soho and Beyond, a tale of food, walking, photography, and tequila

Simple plan to day. Meet up with Pak.  Go for lunch.  Go for a wander,  Have evening food.  Hit a pet bar.

We met up at exit D1 of the Causeway Bay MTR station, the nearest to the Noon Day Gun.  We wandered over there with 20 minutes to spare and waited.  The blast was, well lets just say I was not expecting it to be that loud.  Post being let in to the area and taking photos we wandered on to lunch.  I had been tipped off about a place round the corner, King’s Cuisine, which has really good reviews.  It comes across as an expensive place, sitting in a big plush shopping centre in an expensive area.  The dim sum were good – worth the trip, maybe not the best around, but worth the visit.  The biggest surprise was that the bill was about a third less than expected ! Not a good evening ..

Well my plans were to head o Mong Kok, eat there, then wander down to Yau Ma Tei and wander along the Temple Street Nightmare.  Problem was I could find lots of eateries for good food, however all were either cafes or lunch time spots for brunch, so I settled with TST.  I had a list of 3 places with good reviews and a route covering all.  I went to the first one, the Wu Kong Shanghai and got a table after a 10 minute wait.  This place has really good reviews, is large and busy. Food in and musings of Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)

So the light show has now finished and it’s time for food (well I am me).  For tonight I’ve looked up and taken note of a few good scorers on TripAdviser in the TST area.  In the end I settled on Spring Deer in Mody Street.  Being at the Chatham Road end I wandered along that way rather than navigating the crowds on Nathan Road, especially having survived the hord leaving the Symphony of Lights.  From the side I came in the restaurant is easy to miss, being on the 1st floor of a building – from the Nathan Road side there is  clear sign to see.  Inside it’s not obvious until you reach the first floor at which point you find just how large it is. Fitting at the tailors before a fitting show for Hong Kong

The one problem I had when I got my original suit was that while my measurements were throughly taken twice, there was no chance of a fitting.  So different being near the tailor.  The evening started with me wandering over to get a first fitting on the new suit – some alterations made, then alterations measured on my existing jacket and trousers (sleeves lengthening slightly and trouser waist reduced).  What this means is the measurements they have stored for me in their customer books will not be accurate so in theory I could just email them with a request for a new quit. Visit to the Tailor and Lunch at the Regular Tea House

Well the start of today saw in in work shirt and shoes.  I’m not sure if friends and colleagues realised I was serious about going to my tailor while over here.  Sandy goes across to the UK twice a year for regular and new clients, plus for Harrow Boys School where he does the tailored school uniforms.  I was told about him by two different, unconnected people and so got my first suit from him in November 2010.  At the time he made the trousers too wide and the jacket sleeves were not long enough for my taste (I prefer half cuff visible, not full).  Anyhow my first stop was three minutes walk from the hotel as he’s based in the office area of Star House, by the White Star ferry terminal.  I was remeasured for a new 3-piece suit (plus spare trousers) to find that I’m actually slightly slimmer than last time (not that I had noticed).  I’ll be going back this evening for a first fitting.  If I’m lucky the suit will be ready before I head back to Blighty, else he’l send it on.  My old suit is presently with him so that the trousers can be taken in and the jacket sleeves lengthened.  I’m not sure how prices may have changed in the last four years, but Sandy has charged me the same as last time. First Evening

Did not konw just how good company I’d be this night as I was starting to feel tired before heading out to meet Ida and Timo (who are heading to Taiwan for a holiday tomorrow).  We met for a drink at Al’s Diner in Lan Kwai Fong.  We were joined by one of Ida’s friends, Chloe, a local who’re presently studying in Brighton.  We had a quick drink then headed inside a residential looking block to Mama Chow – a ‘back street’ Szechuan place, the sort of place I love.  Cheap, tatty, good food, small, and not on the tourist trail,  The food was good, though I’d have to say that My Old Place in Bishopsgate is still superior.  Chat was varied and flitted around, however eventually our stomachs were full and it was time to move on.  I was then in for a treat.
