As well as the aluminium AL Sport, there have also been brass and steel Kaweco models for quite a while. 2023 saw the release of an additional version, in bronze, with the one difference being this is a limited model. How limited and for how long, Kaweco do not say.

When you mention Japanese pocket pens most people will think of the Pilot Elite 95 from the late 1960s, or the modern recreation the Elite or E95S (depending on whether sold in Japan or the USA), however back in the day Platinum and Sailor also had a range of similar pens. Here I have a 1960s Sailor pen with a fully hooded nib (most, like the Elite, are semi-hooded).

Sigmund Freud wrote that we are nurtured as toddlers to collect. Sure much if not all, of his work has now been debunked, but too many of us look at limited edition releases of pens and go all Pokemon, have to catch (collect) them all, and boy are the big makers aware of this. Be it the Writers Editions from Montblanc or the flood of annual releases from Lamy, often covering five to eight lines of writing implements. Kaweco are no strangers to this, however limit things (normally) to just their basic Sport and AL Sport models.

I am quite open about the abuse the pen attached to my Midori Traveller Passport journal takes, Much is the bouncing around in a large cargo pants pocket, bouncing with every step I take. It is now time to consider a change, either from within my existing collection or some thing new.

The original Gravitas pen was highly successfully with all finishes selling out quickly and many requests for more to be made, especially in the two ‘Skittles’ finishes. Moving forwards we were introduced to the Entry and Pocket pens, and more recently the Sentry. Based on my previous experience I put my name down to be alerted for when the Rainbow Skittle finish Pocket Pen was to be launched.

As with every collecting based hobby there fads in the fountain pen world, many accidental and most to the surprise of the creator. Such was the situation a year and a half back when Ian Schon launched a machined pocket pen based around a size 6 nib. Selling online and at pen shows his new range attracted the attention of a number of ‘penablers’ who brought the Pocket6 to the fore. By early 2020 this became a must have pen. The fact that online reviewers still use their Pocket6 pens and more than a few have bought additional does infer it is a good writing implement, question is do I get on with the pen and what are my personal views.

Franklin-Christoph must be one of the worst kept secrets in the fountain pen community.  A small North Carolina based company who only sell on line and at US pen shows, yet try finding a fountain pen club around the world where at least a few of their members do not own one or more of their pens.

I must admit I’ve tended to overlook Kaweco pens in the past and while I saw that the Sport and it’s derivatives were really just pocket pens, being (in my mind) too small for practical use even as a pocket/handbag pen.  Who would have thought my near addiction to a French fizzy drink would result in my purchasing and using a limited edition version of one. In 1964 Platinum launched the 200, a ‘long-short’ pocket pen.  This was followed four years later by Pilot with the Elite 95 S, and while production of both was stopped before the Millennia, probably in the 1980s, it was the Pilot that was remembered with the result that in 2014 an updated version was re-introduced in to the USA as the E95S and shortly after in Japan under it’s original name.  Available in either black or burgundy and light gold, it looks very similar to the original.  Note the pen was not available outside the country and also should not be confused with the South Korean produced/licensed Pilot Elite, as covered in this video by Figboot on Pens alongside the E95s.
